Syd Solomon (1917-2004) was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before serving in World War II in both the U.S. and British camouflage units, with his artwork heavily influenced by aerial reconnaissance and environmental landscapes. Solomon and his unit suffered frostbite due to a lack of winter gear, and to soothe the permanent injury to his hands a doctor suggested he move to warmer climates, so after further studies at L’École des Beaux-Arts in France he established a dual studio life in Sarasota, Florida, and East Hampton, New York. Solomon became known for his abstract works combining polymer tempera, inks, oils, and acrylics, often using circles, squares, and curves with bold contrasts including black. He exhibited nationally and internationally, received numerous awards, and helped found the Institute of Fine Art at New College in Sarasota. His home and studio on the Suncoast became a cultural hub for contemporary artists, and his legacy continues through exhibitions at major institutions including the Ringling Museum and the Guggenheim.
