Syd Solomon (1917–2004) was an American abstract artist born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He began painting in high school and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. During WWII, he served in the First Camouflage Battalion and later with the Royal Engineer Camouflage Corps in London, earning five Bronze Stars. His wartime experience, especially in aerial reconnaissance, influenced his abstract style.

After the war, he studied in France and moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1946, becoming the first contemporary artist exhibited at the Ringling Museum. In the 1950s, his national reputation grew, and he began splitting his time between Sarasota and East Hampton, New York—both environments inspiring his work. He and his wife Annie had two children.

By the 1960s, Solomon was known for innovative use of acrylics, resist techniques, and nature-inspired forms. He received major awards, including from the Whitney Museum, and founded the Institute of Fine Art at New College, attracting top artists to Florida. His homes became cultural hubs, and retrospectives of his work were held in 1975. He continued teaching and receiving accolades until he developed Alzheimer’s in the 1990s. He died in Sarasota in 2004.
