Syd Solomon (1917–2004) was an American abstract artist and celebrated World War II camoufleur who earned five Bronze Stars for his military service before moving to Sarasota, Florida, in 1946, where he became the first contemporary artist exhibited at the Ringling Museum of Art. His work, inspired by nature and the environmental settings of Sarasota and East Hampton, incorporated acrylics, inks, oils, and innovative resist techniques, often featuring geometric forms, bold colors, rough edges, and a prominent use of black. Solomon became a leading figure in Florida’s art community, founding the Institute of Fine Art at New College, hosting prominent artists and writers, and receiving numerous honors and major retrospective exhibitions throughout his career.
