Susan Gott (nee Batian) was born in 1959 in the Blue Ridge Mountains region of Virginia. From an early age she formed an appreciation for nature and the play of light and color through rushing river waters amidst the steep valleys of the area. She graduated from Radford University with a BS in Art Education in 1981, but while attending classes she had discovered glassblowing and spent the next decade traveling the country, studying the process at legendary facilities like Haystack, Arrowmont, Penland Schools, and Pilchuck. After receiving the Individual Artists Fellowship Award she obtained her Masters in Art Glass at Kent State in Ohio in 1992. The following year she established a permanent facility in Tampa, Florida to make glass called Phoenix Glass Studio. Today she continues to teach classes at local universities as well as in her atelier, and has won numerous other grants and awards including an American Craft Council Award of Excellence, as well as having her work appear in the Disney Corporate Collection and in permanent museum exhibitions in the Alexander Brest Museum, Cafesjian Museum of Art in Armenia, and the St. Pete Museum.
