Susan Chase Ottison (20th/21st Century) American, Signed Nantucket Woven Rattan Bucket Basket. Woven rattan bucket-style basket with deep well, swing handle, and tightly braided rim. Signed on base, dated 2001.

Susan Chase Ottison is a contemporary American artist best known for her handcrafted Nantucket-style lightship baskets—swing-handled, rattan-woven purses, hampers, and nesting sets signed and dated on Nantucket Island. Her pieces, made from the late 1970s through the 2000s, range from charming egg baskets to striking large purses adorned with carved bone motifs like whales or seagulls, displaying both meticulous craftsmanship and island tradition. At auction, her work typically sells between $200 and $2,125, with the record at $2,125 for a “Nest of Three Small Nantucket Baskets” sold in 2021. Ottison’s creations continue the legacy of Nantucket lightship basketry—originally crafted by sailors—while infusing it with personal artistry and modern appeal.
