Steven Silverleaf was born in 1954 in New York City. His parents were upper middle class and valued intellectual adventure and creativity, exposing him to poetry and literary discussions early on, where Steven developed an appreciation for allegory and myth that would later influence his art. The family had multiple homes, and Steven spent most of his childhood traveling between New York, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Athens, Greece. He studied painting, drawing, and comparative religion at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, graduating in 1977. He spent many years engaging with the experimental poetry, theater, and dance scene in Milwaukee, remaining in the city for almost a decade after graduating before moving to North Carolina and making it his home base. He first managed a gallery and taught art lessons in Chapel Hill, serving on juries for art competitions, being called on as a consultant, and curating numerous arts events. In 1992 he built a home in Carrboro and opened a studio called Art With A View, where he began to focus on abstract figurative paintings as well as collage motivated by color and composition. In the early 2000s he also established a studio space in Sapporo, Japan. He continues to divide his time between these two studios, and has been a firm advocate for COVID-19 precautions in both art classes and exhibitions.
