Stella Nina McCartney was born September 13th, 1971, the daughter of British singer-songwriter Paul McCartney and the American photographer and animals rights activist Linda McCartney. As a girl McCartney traveled the globe with her parents and their group Wings, along with her siblings. Despite their fame, the McCartneys wanted their children to live as normal a life as possible, so Stella and her siblings attended local state schools in East Sussex, one of them being Bexhill College. McCartney became interested in designing clothes as a youth. At the age of 13 she designed her first jacket, and three years later she interned for Christian Lacroix, working on her first haute couture collection. She further honed her skills while working for Edward Sexton (her father’s Savile Row tailor) for a number of years. McCartney studied at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication (now Ravensbourne University, London), followed by fashion design at Central Saint Martins in the early 1990s, graduating in 1995. In 1997 McCartney was named the creative director of Chloé, a position she held until 2001 when she launched a fashion house under her name in a joint venture with Gucci Group (now Kering). She presented her first collection in Paris the following year, and now operates 51 freestanding stores across the globe. Like her parents, McCartney is an environmentalist and a supporter of animal rights, and refuses to use leather or fur in her pieces, incorporating vegetarian and animal-free alternatives in her work. In the 2000s she developed two extremely lucrative lines for Disney and Adidas. In 2018 McCartney purchased Kering’s stake in her company and took full control of her fashion empire, then signed a strategic partnership with LVMH. That same year McCartney launched the Stella McCartney Cares Foundation, a charity dedicated to breast cancer in honor of her mother, who passed away in 1998.
