In 2002, entrepreneur and University of Virginia graduate Michael Bisceglia was on a trip to Bali with his wife contemplating whether or not to buy a bracelet at a certain price point, and decided to conduct a marketing study to see what most people would see as a reasonable one. To his surprise, he discovered that over 50% of upscale jewelry marketed for women was purchased by men, and that while men responded more positively to advertisement, nearly all companies were focused solely on advertising to women. He founded Stauer the following year in Burnsville, Minnesota, a privately held luxury goods and jewelry company that focused heavily on advertising to men, selling necklaces, watches, pendants, and much more. They sought not just to sell items based on their visual appeal but ones that carried interesting stories, always presenting each piece with a blurb about their origin or history. As a result, by 2008 the company had broken $200 million in sales and has continued to grow since. Bisceglia refers to the company as the “Indiana Jones” of the jewelry world, saying “we consider ourselves more historians than anything else.”
