Stanley Ledington was born in Durham, England on April 3rd, 1889. As a boy he studied music in Plymouth, and in 1910 he emigrated to the United States. He taught music at colleges in Ohio, West Virginia, Minnesota, and Nebraska over the next two decades. In 1936 he moved to California to become the music director for schools in San Diego and Lynwood, where he was first introduced to the visual arts. He took up watercolor painting as a hobby, studying for four summers under Doug Kingman and winning many prizes in exhibitions around the state. He eventually became an integral part of the movement known as the California Style, or “Regionalists,” which included notable artists like Phil Dike, Rex Brandt, Barse Miller, Emil Kosa Jr., Phil Paradise, and Paul Sample. In 1954 he became the president of the San Diego Art Guild, and remained active in the local art scene as well as continuing his love of music as the organist for the First Lutheran Church right up until his death on May 6th, 1974.
