Sophie Gengembre Anderson was born in Paris, France in 1823. The daughter of Charles Antoine Colomb Gengembre, a French architect and artist, she was exposed to many art styles early on. After her father was injured in the Revolution of 1830 the family moved to London, where he worked for Charles Fourier for a time. Anderson did not develop an interest in being an artist until she was seventeen, and was largely self-taught in art, taking a handful of portrait painting lessons from Charles de Steuben in 1843 after the family returned to Paris. The family fled the 1848 Revolution and moved to the United States, adopting the surname Hubert. They settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she met her future husband, the British genre artist Walter Anderson. Her first exhibition took place at the Western Art Union Gallery in 1849, where she displayed her portraiture, figural, and landscape paintings. She moved to Manchester, Pennsylvania to be closer to her parents, working for the chromolithographers Louis Prang & Company, and married Walter in 1853. In 1854 the Andersons moved to London, where Sophie began exhibiting with the Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy. Although they traveled extensively throughout the 1860s she developed health issues and moved to the Isle of Capri in 1871, where the couple lived, painted, and entertained society in the Villa Castello. They helped to develop the artists colony forming there along with Frederic Leighton and John Singer Sargent. In 1894 the couple relocated to Falmouth, Cornwall, living in Wood Lane Cottage and continuing to exhibit in London. Her specialty in genre painting was children and women in rural settings, which never fell out of favor in her lifetime, and her lithographs were still bestsellers when she died on March 10th, 1903, just two months after the death of her husband. Her work can be found in numerous museums and galleries, mainly throughout the United Kingdom, and her idyllic prints are still produced to this day.
