In the mid-1850s August Schatz began crafting clocks and other measuring devices in the Black Forest region of Triburg, Germany. His company was registered in 1881 as Schatz & Wintermantel, and was re-structured in 1884 with the assistance of an inventor named Anton Harder as Jahresuhrenfabrik (Year Clock Factory) A.G. By this time they were well known not only for their timepieces but for their barometers and other weather analysis equipment, with their works prominently used on many of the new German vessels commissioned for the burgeoning Navy. Their patent on the anniversary clock was sold to F.A.L. deGruyter of Amsterdam, but when it became possible to reacquire it they allowed it to expire, planning on going in a different direction with their company. They registered again in 1897 as Jahresuhrenfabrik GmbH, and finally in 1923 as Jahresuhrenfabrik August Schatz & Sohne. For most of their history they were well-known for their cuckoo clocks and 400-day clocks, and in the early 20th Century they began to produce electric clocks and battery-operated quartz clocks. However, the company struggled to remain competitive after damage during World War II, and by the early 1980s they were in dire straits, finally closing down completely in 1985.
