Stetson is an iconic American hat brand founded by John B. Stetson (1830-1906) in Philadelphia in 1865, after he developed a rugged, wide-brimmed felt hat he named the “Boss of the Plains” to withstand the elements and even carry water during his convalescence in the West. This design became the foundational piece of the American cowboy image and the cornerstone of his business, so ubiquitous with frontier culture that it is often used as shorthand for nearly any cowboy hat made to this day. The John B. Stetson Company rapidly grew to become the world’s largest hat manufacturer, producing millions of hats annually in the massive Philadelphia factory until its closure in the 1970s. Today the brand has diversified beyond its famous Western and fashion hats to include apparel, footwear, fragrance, and even bourbon.
