Tibetan Buddhist Carved Wood Ritual Zanpar.

Intricately carved figural shapes throughout, with a rounded handle on the end to hang it up or hold it by during chants.

Size: 16 1/4 x 3 1/4 x 1 in. 

A zanpar (also spelled zenpar, zangpar, or zan-spar) is a Tibetan carved wooden mold stick used to create dough effigies for ritual purposes. These effigies, made from a mixture of barley flour (tsampa), water, and sometimes other ingredients, serve as stand-ins or offerings to appease spirits or deities, or for rituals of protection and exorcism. The intricate carvings on the zanpar itself depict religious objects, spirits, and symbols, guiding the practitioner in creating the appropriate dough offering. Buddhist lamas may also use zanpar during divination rituals while chanting mantras, and especially old pieces that have survived for centuries because of the dry climate of Tibet are highly treasured objects by the monasteries that possess them.
