Polished Hollowed Hardstone with Carved Turtles. Polished hardstone with partially hollowed interior hiding a carved turtle and hatchling emerging from the opening.

Turtles are reptiles known for their distinctive hard shells, which protect their bodies and grow with them throughout life. They belong to the order Testudines and are found in a variety of environments, including oceans, rivers, and forests. Most turtles are slow-moving and can live for many decades, with some species, like the Galápagos tortoise, living over 100 years. They are cold-blooded, rely on external heat sources to regulate body temperature, and have strong, beak-like mouths instead of teeth. Turtles play important roles in ecosystems, from maintaining healthy seagrass beds to controlling insect populations.
