Small Russian Silver Icon Pendant. Small Russian silver pendant with the visage of Saint Nicholas, with radiant halo.

Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop of Myra in what is now Turkey, is revered as a patron saint of children, sailors, and the poor, and is the historical figure behind the modern Santa Claus. Known for his generosity, humility, and miraculous deeds, he became legendary for secretly providing dowries to impoverished girls and calming storms at sea. His feast day, December 6, was celebrated throughout medieval Europe and inspired traditions of gift-giving and charity. Over centuries, Saint Nicholas’s image evolved through folklore and cultural adaptation, eventually merging with Nordic and Victorian influences to become the jolly figure of Christmas lore. Yet beneath the red robes and sleigh bells lies a legacy rooted in compassion, justice, and quiet kindness.
