Simon Pearce was born in 1946 in London, England. His mother was Irish and his father American, and he grew up in Kilkenny, Ireland, where he first learned how to make pottery. Upon discovering glassblowing, he traveled to Italy in the 1960s and studied it for many years, working with several prominent Venetian glass companies. He eventually opened his own glass factory in the United States, at Quechee, Vermont, in 1981. This site, which is powered hydroelectrically by the Ottauquechee River and is part of the Quechee Historic Mill District, became a showroom, restaurant, and glass-blowing demonstration facility over time. He sells items from his showroom as well as online, and many of his pieces have been gifted to foreign dignitaries and to presenters at the Academy Awards. Pearce’s company headquarters is now in Windsor, Vermont, near where he settled along with his wife and four sons. Another manufacturing facility was opened in the early 2000s in Mountain Lake Park, Maryland, around the same time the company opened several retail outlets along the East Coast. Pearce’s book “Simon Pearce: Design For Living” was published in the fall of 2016, and he continues to innovate new processes and design concepts even in his late 70s.
