Simon Gate (1883-1945) Swedish, Orrefors Crystal "Thousand Windows" Bowl. One of his signature designs, with cut patterns that create repetitive optical illusions on the sides above the foot. Signed on the underside.
Size: 5 x 7 1/4 in.
Simon Gate was born on March 10th, 1883 in Skaraborg, Sweden. He studied ceramics and pottery first at the College of Technology in Stockholm before attending the Academy of Art, where he studied painting. In 1916, while working as a graphic designer, he was recruited by the director of Orrefors Glassworks, Albert Ahlin, and was instrumental in developing the Graal technique, in which colored glass is embodied in the body of a piece. His style of engraving was conservative and realist, drawing on traditional classical European models, and his work was part of art competitions at the 1932 and 1936 Summer Olympics. He stayed with Orrefors for nearly thirty years, but his prodigious output was cut short by sudden acute actinomycosis on May 11th, 1945, and his work has only become more collectable and inspirational to new glass artists since his death.
