Simon Bull was born in 1958 in Bedfordshire, England. His father Ian served as an officer in the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department of the British Army, and his extensive military postings stationed the family around the world in Guyana, Hong Kong, Germany, and Northern Ireland, exposing Bull to many different locations as well as art forms early on. He went to boarding school in Yorkshire, attending Ripon Cathedral Choir School from 1965 to 1969, and finished at the Royal Russell School by 1976. After graduation he took a one-year Foundation course at Gloucestershire College of Art and Design and went on to graduate in 1980 from Leeds Polytechnic with a BA degree in Fine Art. He studied printmaking and Fine Art under Norman Webster and Norman Ackroyd, where he honed his skill and was heavily influenced by Rembrandt and the watercolorist John Sell Cotman. Throughout the 1980s and 90s he worked in commercial art, but after obtaining representation at multiple galleries throughout the United Kingdom he won the British Fine Art Trade Guild’s award for top-selling artist in 2000, allowing him to focus on original works full time. By the 2010s he was dividing his time between home studios in the United States and England, and in 2017 he opened Meuse Gallery in Carmel, California to give other artists opportunities to share their work, as well as shifting to self-representation. The following year he opened a second gallery in Saint Helena, California, although both facilities faced difficulties in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. He published his autobiography “Artist, Drawn From Life” in 2021, and opened a new gallery in Aspen, Colorado in 2023. His works are now found in public, private, and corporate collections all over the world.
