Silverplate Sardine Dish with Lid and Tray. Electroplated silver sardine plate with incise floral decoration and foliate scrollwork on tray rim. Marked EPNS EO on base. No hallmarks.

Sardine dishes are specialized serving pieces designed in the 19th and early 20th centuries for presenting sardines and other small fish at the table with elegance and convenience. Typically rectangular or oval in shape, these dishes often feature a silver-plated or sterling silver base with a fitted, hinged lid—sometimes adorned with a fish-shaped finial—and a removable glass or ceramic liner for easy cleaning. Popular during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, sardine dishes were a mark of refined dining and were often included in larger silver service sets. Their design balanced function with decorative appeal, making them both a practical item for preserving freshness and an attractive addition to the table.
