Collage (from the French coller, meaning “to glue” or “to stick together”) is a technique of art creation primarily used in the visual arts by which art results from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. A collage may sometimes include magazine and newspaper clippings, ribbons, paint, bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas. The techniques involved made a dramatic reappearance in the early 20th Century as an artform, but were first used at the time of the invention of paper in China, around 200 BC. The wide-spread use of collage, however, did not arise until roughly the 10th Century in Japan, when calligraphers began to apply glued paper, using texts on surfaces, when writing their poems. It is uncertain if the Asian traditions had an effect on the collage which first appeared in medieval Europe during the 13th Century, as gold leaf, gemstones, and other precious metals were applied to religious images, icons, and coats of arms. Many institutions have attributed the beginnings of the worldwide practice of collage to Picasso and Braque in 1912, although early Victorian photocollages suggest their techniques were practiced by the 1860s. Most historians see collage (and its similar artforms, pastiche and papier collé) as inherently connected with the rise of Modernism and to certain extent Surrealism, as a way of intertextualizing images and ideas in a traditionally two dimensional space to create a visual palimpsest, rather than a single, static image.
