A shamsa (or little sun) is an intricately decorated rosette or medallion that serves as a central ornamental motif in Islamic art. Meaning "little sun" in Arabic, the shamsa is stylized as a sunburst and features prominently in illuminated manuscripts, carpets, and architectural decoration. It is characterized by the use of intricate, repetitive geometrical, floral, or vegetal forms known as the arabesque. As with other patterns in Islamic art, the shamsa carries religious significance, symbolizing the transcendent, indivisible, and infinite nature of God.
