Sidney Richard Percy (1822–1886) was a highly successful English landscape painter of the Victorian era, celebrated for his tranquil and atmospheric depictions of the British countryside—particularly in North Wales, the Lake District, Devon, Yorkshire, and the Scottish Highlands. Born in London into the prolific Williams family of artists, he adopted the surname “Percy” at age 20 to distinguish himself from his relatives and carved out a distinctive career marked by realism infused with romantic light effects. Percy exhibited over 300 works at prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy, British Institution, and Suffolk Street Gallery between 1842 and 1886, earning acclaim and commanding a comfortable lifestyle during his peak years. His paintings are renowned for luminous skies, reflective waters, and the integration of human figures or grazing cattle into sweeping landscapes, often enhanced by his use of photography—a medium he explored seriously. Percy suffered a fatal riding accident in 1886, which led to a leg amputation and subsequent heart failure; his work is today held in numerous British and international collections, including Tate Britain, the Royal Collection, and museums in Cardiff, Sheffield, and Montreal.
