Sewell Sillman was born on October 24th, 1924 in Savannah, Georgia. He attended Black Mountain College, studying art and design under the Bauhaus master Josef Albers. Sillman transferred to Yale University to follow Albers and graduated from there with a BFA degree in 1951, and a MFA degree in 1953. Sillman then joined the faculty at Yale himself, working from 1953 to 1966. He also taught at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now known as Carnegie Mellon University) from 1963 to 1965, then went on to teach at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) from 1966 to 1985, and finally became a professor of art at University of Pennsylvania from 1985 to 1990. Sillman also served as an artist and teacher in residence at Parsons School of Design several times, and among his many notable students were Bruce Helander, Newton Harrison, and Howardena Pindell, all of whom were heavily influenced by Sillman’s lessons on color theory. Ives-Sillman, Inc. was founded in 1958 by Sillman and his co-worker and fellow professor at Yale University, Norman Seaton Ives. They published primarily silkscreen prints and photographs in monographic art portfolios. Their first published work was “Josef Albers: Interaction of Color” in 1963, and they soon followed with pieces by Walker Evans, Roy Lichtenstein, Piet Mondrian, Ad Reinhardt, Jean Dubuffet, Jacob Lawrence, and Romare Bearden. Sillman died after a short battle with cancer on April 5th, 1992 at his home in Lyme, Connecticut, and his impact on the art publishing community as well as arts education can still be felt today.
