Sergio Bustamante (Born 1949) Mexican, Papier-Mache Hummingbird Sculpture on Metal Swing. The bird is exquisitely detailed in a beautiful combination of rainbow-like reds, oranges, yellows, blues, and greens with a black beak and grey feet, wings triumphantly outstretched. A hole in the base connects it to a pole on the middle of the ceiling-anchored swinging perch. Signed and numbered 89/100 under the wing on the left side of the bird.
Condition: Some patina on the swing. Very minor scuffs on a few surfaces of the bird. Overall great.
Size: 15 1/2 x 19 x 30 1/2 in.
Sergio Bustamante is a Mexican artist and sculptor who was born in Culiacan, Sinaloa, in 1949, and studied architecture at the University of Guadalajara. Bustamante’s first art exhibition showcased paintings and papier-mâché figures at the Galeria Misracha in Mexico City in 1966. In 1972 Bustamante relocated to Amsterdam to expand his skills in paint and design, and to “learn how to be alone and self-sufficient.” In 1975, not long after his return to Mexico, he established his Family Workshop Studio in Tlaquepaque, where he has lived, worked, and created art ever since. Two additional studios have since opened, thanks to his growing appeal in the art world, and by branching out into wood and bronze sculpture as well.
