This is an etching by Sears Gallagher, a Boston painter recognized for his drawings, etchings, watercolors, and oil paintings. His work consisted largely of landscapes and cityscapes of Boston and northern New England, and marine scenes that showed off his love for the sea. He illustrated books and magazines, and people have compared his etchings to those of Whistler.
The etching here depicts soldiers from the French and Indian War or the Revolutionary War of the 1700's. It's been executed in fine detail, and it is signed in the margin at the bottom and monogrammed "SG" in a small circle on the image in the lower right. The overall size is 23 x 18 1/4 in. wide and the sight size is 12 3/4 x 8 3/4 in. wide.
