Sealed Sotheby's 1996 Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Catalog. Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis (1929-1994), nicknamed "Jackie Kennedy" or "Jackie O" following her second marriage, was the first lady of the United States from 1961 to 1963 as the wife of John F. Kennedy. She redefined the role of first lady by hosting cultural and intellectual events, leading the restoration of the White House, and influencing 1960s fashion with the "Jackie Look." She was next to Kennedy when he was assassinated in Dallas and a rallying point for many in the aftermath, but lost much of her public adoration after her second marriage to Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, and spent the remainder of her life devoted to charitable causes which revived her status as an American icon. She left an estate that its executors valued at $43.7 million, which Sotheby's handled and which is presented in its entirety in this catalog.

Sotheby’s is a British-founded multinational corporation with headquarters in New York City. It is one of the world’s largest brokers of fine and decorative art, jewelry, and collectibles. It has 80 locations in 40 countries, and maintains a significant presence in the United Kingdom. Sotheby’s was established in 1744 in London by Samuel Baker, a bookseller. In 1767 the firm became Baker & Leigh, after George Leigh became a partner, and was renamed to Leigh and Sotheby in 1778 after Baker’s death when Leigh’s nephew, John Sotheby, inherited Leigh’s share. John significantly expanded the scope of business of the firm to include the sale of prints, medals, coins, and rare antiquities apart from books. Over the years other partners joined, including Wilkinson and Hodge, and by the late 20th Century they had changed names several times before finally becoming Sotheby’s & Co. The American holding company was initially incorporated in 1983 in Michigan as Sotheby’s Holdings, Inc. In 2006 it was reincorporated in the State of Delaware and was renamed Sotheby’s, and in 2019 it was acquired by French-Israeli businessman Patrick Drahi with a 61% market share. Sotheby’s Institute of Art (an educational facility), Sotheby’s International Realty (real estate dealers), and RM Sotheby’s (classic car dealers) are subsidiaries or partner organizations.
