Scottish Highland Stoneware Decorative Loch Assynt Square Platter. Beautiful reflecting landscape enameled on the top of the platter, which has flared sides. Label on underside, as well as maker's mark.

Highland Stoneware was formed in 1974 by David Grant while studying at the Royal College of Art in London. With support from his professor David Queensberry and tutor Grahame Clarke, he set up a small manufacturing outfit in the North West Highlands of Scotland, in order to make tableware with the quality of studio pottery while using semi-industrial techniques. Initially they made plain tableware, but very soon started to decorate pots and hand-paint sculptural and functional stoneware. The endeavor was partially in the hopes of opening up opportunities for employment in the very fragile local economy of the rugged lands where Grant had grown up, and today Grant continues to work at the facility, coming up with new designs, with a staff of 23 artisans at the Lochinver location and 5 others at an Ullapool extension that opened in 1981.
