Scott Draves was born in Beloit, Wisconsin in 1958. He graduated from Beloit Memorial High School where he was first introduced to art, and decided to pursue painting at Blackhawk Technical College. He began his pottery career as a decorator in 1987 at Rowe Pottery in Cambridge, Wisconsin. By 1995 he had a strong background in slip decoration and brush work, but as he had begun collecting pottery himself he became fascinated by the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th Century. He began working alongside one of the potters, Jon Milhon, to test hundreds of glazes in an effort to duplicate their styles, and in 1997 he tried to convince the owners to let him create a line. When they declined his request, he left with Milhon and a few others to found Ephraim Pottery. Their early pieces were particularly intricate, but by 2000 he was embroiled in artistic and business differences and decided to leave the following year to form Door Pottery with his wife Tina. The smaller pottery gave him infinitely more control and allowed him to remain hands-on at all times, as well as providing him the opportunity to teach the Arts and Crafts style to interested students. In 2004, due to continually growing success and the need to expand, he purchased the defunct Lakeside Pottery facility, with larger teaching spaces and one of the biggest high fire kilns in Wisconsin. Today he is a member of the American Art Pottery Association, and a fervent advocate for creativity and handmade innovation over mass production. Many of his pieces are in private collections throughout the Midwest, as well as in a permanent display at the Madison City Hall.
