Sarah Schuster is a contemporary American painter and longtime Professor of Studio Art at Oberlin College, where she has taught since 1988. Born and raised in Boston, she earned a BFA from Boston University in 1979 and an MFA from Yale University in 1982. Schuster’s work explores the fragile interplay between creation and destruction, often drawing from environmental and scientific themes—ranging from oil-spill imagery to ecological motifs—and translating them into evocative, layered paintings. Her practice spans oil, egg tempera, and mixed media on panel or canvas, as seen in recent works like The Light of the Moon and Shadows in the Tower, which showcase her meticulous technique, dreamlike atmospheres, and deep engagement with natural processes. A devoted educator, Schuster has exhibited internationally—including in Turkey, South Korea, and China—and her art is celebrated for its intellectual depth, formal experimentation, and poetic resonance.
