This is an oil on board by Sarah Rakes, an American artist who was born in Arkansas in the Ozark Mountains and was inspired by nature and her rural surroundings. She moved to Georgia in the 1970's and only started painting in the 1980's. She is considered a contemporary folk artist and uses strong, bright layered colors in her work. The frames are made by her husband and daughter and Sarah paints the frames herself.
The painting is titled "Apple Tree" on the back and shows an apple tree in full bloom. It is signed and dated 2002 in the lower left and it is signed on the back as well. The frame was painted by her, too. The overall size is overall size is 14 5/8 x 16 5/8 in. wide and the sight size is 12 3/8 x 14 3/8 in. wide. Provenance: the Hirsch estate,
