Sandra MacDiarmid uses centuries-old painting practices, and then twists them to portray her own personal experiences. She often uses a warm, orange base as the medium ground on her canvases, similar to old master painters, but then uses bolder, more brilliant hues that give a more vibrant impression upon the viewer, reinforcing the feelings of excitement she gets when she first visits the locations of her paintings. Whether drawing from the landscapes near her home in Northern California, or painting on location during her annual retreats to Italy, Sandra MacDiarmid seeks to capture her feelings that can only be derived from experiential knowledge of the places she visits.
