Salvador Dalí, born in 1904 in Figueres, Spain, was a pioneering Surrealist artist known for his eccentric personality and iconic works like The Persistence of Memory. Raised in Catalonia, where he first developed a love for art, he studied at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid and gained early recognition with exhibitions in Barcelona and Pittsburgh. In Paris, he joined the Surrealist movement and met Gala Eluard, who became his lifelong muse and partner. Though later expelled from the Surrealists, Dalí continued to evolve artistically, embracing themes of science and religion during his “classic” period. During World War II, he fled to the U.S., where he became a cultural icon, famously collaborating with Walt Disney and publishing his autobiography. Returning to Spain in the mid-1940s, he remained prolific despite his controversial support of Franco and declining health. Dalí died in 1989, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most recognizable and influential artists of the 20th century.
