Salvador Dali was born May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain. In the 1920s Dali went to Paris and began interacting with Picasso, Magritte, and Miro leading to his first Surrealist phase. The rise of the fascist leader Franco in Spain led to Dali's expulsion from the Surrealist movement, but that did not prevent him from painting. In the 1940s, Dali moved into a new style that eventually became known as his "classic" period, demonstrating a preoccupation with science and religion. This 1975 portrayal of worshippers before the Wailing Wall, the only remaining part of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, demonstrates his fascination with religion, from ancient beginnings to modern ramifications. Salvador Dalí died on January 23, 1989 in Figueres from heart failure with respiratory complications.
