Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) was a Spanish surrealist artist renowned for his striking, dreamlike imagery and flamboyant personality. Born in Figueres, Catalonia, he was influenced by Impressionism and Cubism early in his career before becoming one of the most prominent figures in Surrealism. Dalí’s work is characterized by bizarre, hallucinatory scenes rendered in meticulous detail, often exploring themes of time, death, sexuality, and the subconscious—epitomized by his iconic 1931 painting The Persistence of Memory, featuring melting clocks in a desolate landscape. Beyond painting, Dalí engaged in sculpture, film, fashion, and photography, embracing a multidisciplinary approach that matched his theatrical public persona. His eccentricity and self-promotion made him both a controversial and celebrated figure in 20th-century art.
