Salijon Mamatkulov (b. 1966) Uzbeki, Mixed Media on Canvas. Abstract shapes and colors over a buried image of a flautist riding on the back of a cryptozoological creature. Signed and dated '97 bottom right. Title, signature, date, and further information written on back of canvas in Cyrillic. Unframed.

Salijon Mamatkulov was born in 1966 in the city of Asaka in Uzbekistan. He studied philology at the Moscow Pedagogical University in the 1980s, learning several Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages. Through his research he was introduced to the wide spectrum of visual arts, and returned to Uzbekistan to study painting at the Tashkent State Institute of Culture. He joined the Union of Professional Russian Artists in 1989, and studied further at the Pavel Benkov Academy in the Samarkand Art School, having his first solo exhibition in 1997. He won several international awards for his abstract work in the 2000s, and is a regular organizer of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan, encouraging and coordinating folk and applied arts and crafts throughout the country. His works are found in several Uzbeki museums and in private collections throughout Russia, China, Turkey, and the United States.
