Saburo Nisshō (also known as Saburō Hasegawa) was a prominent Japanese artist and writer born in 1906. He was deeply influenced by both Japanese traditions and Western modernism, becoming a key figure in the Gutai group, known for its experimental and avant-garde art. Nisshō’s work ranged from traditional Japanese ink paintings to modernist oil paintings, photograms, and avant-garde calligraphy. His art often explored themes of Zen Buddhism and Daoism, and he was instrumental in bringing Japanese and Western art forms together. Nisshō’s career also included significant contributions to art criticism and education, particularly during his time in the United States in the 1950s before he passed away in 1957.
