Roy M. Steinberg was born in Bartow, Florida in 1929. His youth was spent exploring the wild interior of the state, and it wasn’t until he joined the United States Navy in 1947 that he was exposed to art around the world. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade during the Korean War, and when he returned to the States he used the GI Bill to pursue a BFA at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1952. In 1956 he moved to New York City, where he spent six years continuing his studies at the Art Students League, becoming a Life Member. It was here that he met and married his wife Gail, a fellow artist. He gained critical appreciation for his abstract expressionism and representational form, and established a studio in the Barron Arts Center in Woodbridge, New Jersey, frequently offering private lessons, lectures, and workshops in figure drawing and sketching to his contemporaries. His solo exhibits at the Wrans Gallery in New Jersey and the Celedon in SoHo were highly acclaimed, and his work was hosted by the Mellon Collection, the Atlantic County Museum, the CPI Corporation, and the Beaux Arts Gallery in Fort Lauderdale. His most prodigious period was the 1960s and 70s, but even into the early 2000s he was still working. He became a member and instructor at the Edison Arts Society in Woodbridge, as well as co-hosting the radio series “Festival of the Arts” on WPBR in Florida, conducting interviews with artists from around the country. He died in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of Modernist works and students who were heavily influenced by his style in both New England and the Southeast.
