Ronald J. Sloan is an American self-taught painter associated with outsider and visionary art, known for intensely personal, instinctive works that blend expressionism, symbolism, and dreamlike imagery. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1932, Sloan served in Korea before dedicating himself to painting, eventually settling in Norfolk, Connecticut, where he and his wife operated Shoestring Antiques and Gallery. Over a career spanning more than four decades, his work has appeared in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions and earned recognition through fellowships at the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, a National Endowment for the Arts painting grant, and support from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. Critics and curators have described Sloan’s paintings as emotionally direct, imaginative, and deeply authentic, noting that his relative distance from the commercial art world allowed him to maintain an intensely individual artistic voice.
