Romuald Hengstler (1930-2003) German, Oil on Canvas Painting. Signed and dated on the reverse. Hengstler studied at the Stuttgart Art Academy under Karl Rössing from 1952 to 1954. In 1957 he received the Youth Art Prize in Baden-Baden, and in 1962 the Youth Art Prize in Stuttgart. In 1962, the first paintings of his structural type emerged, which he continually perfected. He turned to scriptural painting, but through condensation, he created a colored pictorial body that did not forgo the filling in of forms and colors. He meticulously documented overlapping layers —provisional, successful, and less successful states. Later, the success of conceptual art favored Romuald Hengstler's painting. The mere recording of the passage of time—date paintings—seemed to suffice. Here, Hengstler demonstrated a fundamentally different understanding of the visualization of time. Through vertical superimposition, former complexes sank layer by layer. He steadfastly rejected the opportunistic conclusion of paintings. Provenance: Dr. Baldhard Falk, Tiburon, California.
