Romero Britto, born on October 6th, 1963 in Recife, Brazil, grew up in extreme poverty following the 1964 military coup. Early exposure to art through books inspired him to sell copied works on the street, eventually fleeing to Europe in 1983 to study art freely, drawing influence from Matisse and Picasso. Developing a vibrant style blending Cubism, pop art, and graffiti, he worked in watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink, and sculpture. In 1988 he immigrated to Miami, gaining international recognition with commissions for Absolut Vodka, Disney, BMW, IBM, Apple, Pepsi, and Royal Caribbean. Britto’s work is celebrated for its optimism and bold patterns, and he has public installations in London, Berlin, and New York, while supporting over 250 charitable organizations, earning him the distinction of “the most collected and licensed Brazilian artist in history.”
