Byzantine Style Russian Icon of Saint Barbara (Varvara) with Chalice and Cross in Hand, signature & date lower left 1908 in Greek language, also Cyrillic. Likely made in Afon Island in Greece. Painted on wood, gilt halo or venet, wax seal on back. Very good condition, minor paint loss along edges (see photos).
Saint Barbara continues to be a popular saint in modern times, perhaps best known as the patron saint of artillery-men, military engineers, miners, and others who work with explosives because of her old legend's association with lightning, and also of mathematicians.
