Bessarabian rugs and carpets refer to a category of pile and tapestry-woven textiles originating from Russian provinces, Ukraine, and Moldova during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. While some scholars distinguish flat-woven pieces as Bessarabian and knotted-pile works as Ukrainian, today they are predominantly associated with regions in modern Bulgaria and Romania, and were produced under Late Ottoman rule, representing a unique stylistic intersection between European and Oriental weaving traditions. Unlike Persian carpets, which are often classified by specific regional weaves, the term “Bessarabian” is applied broadly because the weave primarily indicates whether the rug was intended for a rural or urban market. The designs are highly decorative and frequently feature naturalistic floral motifs executed in a Western style, similar to specific Karabagh rugs from the Caucasus, typically featuring black or brown backgrounds while sometimes incorporating the distinctive palettes found in traditional Anatolian kilims.
