Roger J. Williams was born in Logan, Ohio in 1946. As a child he suffered from dyslexia, which made academic life extremely difficult. He spent most of his school time in art class exploring geometric shapes to escape from his troubles, and his art teacher helped him put together a portfolio to submit to various colleges, which led him to obtain his BFA from Columbus College of Art & Design. In 1968 he began focusing on postmodernism and joined the faculty of CCAD, teaching there for the next seven years. He established a studio in German Village, where his work was quickly picked up by dealers and gallerists and eventually led him to accept an offer to come to New York City to work in Andy Warhol’s Factory in 1980. He spent the next fifteen years in the city, delving deeper into Pop Art as he worked alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Sol LeWitt, and Keith Haring. During the cultural collapse of the art scene in the 90s in the wake of the AIDS crisis, he decided to return to Columbus, where he embraced deconstructivism and began to focus more on sculpture and large-scale murals. Today his works are in private, public, and corporate collections around the country, and he continues to work from his home studio.
