Roger Tory Peterson (1908–1996) was an American ornithologist, conservationist, author, educator, and influential wildlife artist whose work helped shape modern bird watching and environmental awareness. Trained in art at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design, he combined artistic skill with keen observation of nature to create the first Peterson Field Guide to the Birds in 1934, a revolutionary pocket guide that made bird identification accessible to millions and launched the iconic Peterson Field Guide series. His clear, systematic illustrations and Peterson Identification System transformed how people engage with birds and inspired a new generation of naturalists around the world. Throughout his life he wrote, illustrated, and published numerous field guides and nature books, lectured widely, and became a leading voice in the conservation movement, earning awards including the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom.
