Robert Sterling 20th Century American, Circa 1940's Abstract Signed Oil on Canvas. Robert Sterling was born in Colorado in 1914. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1935, the same year he was invited to exhibit at the Golden Gate International Exposition. His works have appeared in books and documentaries cataloging the evolution of art on the West Coast, particularly among the California Modernist Movement which rejected Impressionism in favor of more abstract representation. This piece uses abstract shapes to convey the menace and power of a snake ready to attack the artist, the segmented body in three distinct sections amidst a desert background.
