Provenance: From the Rose Art Museum, Waltham, Mass.

This piece is on page 23 of Robert Richenburg Abstract Expressionist Exhibition Catalog done by Rose Art Museum August 28 - October 17, 1993.

From the catalog; "Does this radiant, glowing spiral announce the formation of a galaxy, or its death. The spiral appears to whiz through the blackness of space surrounded everywhere by buoyant colored orbs of light that seem to glow and sparkle. Richenburg's title recalls the proclivity of prescientific cultures to interpret celestial events as portents of good or evil.

Size: 57 1/4 x 77 1/2 in.

Robert Richenburg (1917-2006) was an influential American abstract expressionist painter known for his bold, gestural canvases and commitment to the emotional power of color and form. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he studied at Brooklyn College and the Art Students League before serving in World War II, experiences that shaped his artistic vision. Richenburg was associated with the New York School of painters in the 1950s, exhibiting alongside contemporaries such as Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning, and his work often explored rhythm, movement, and psychological intensity through densely layered paint and dynamic brushwork. In addition to his studio practice, he taught at institutions including the University of Minnesota and the Pratt Institute, influencing generations of artists, and his paintings are included in major museum collections, reflecting his enduring contribution to postwar American art.
