Robert Pyne (1836-1908) American, "Marshes Near Leonia" Oil on Canvas. Depicts a small hillside homestead with two tiny figures dwarfed by the majesty of the surrounded landscape. Signed and dated 1868 bottom right. Plaque on bottom middle of frame gives attribution, date, and title. Writing on back of frame and protective cover on stretcher.

Robert Lorraine Pyne (1836-1908) was a landscape painter based in New York City, who exhibited his oil paintings of the Catskills and Berkshires of New York and Massachusetts at the National Academy of Design from 1861 to 1897. Like many of the Hudson River School, he was most known for his beautiful sunset scenes that are very reminiscent of the European romantic landscape and by an almost religious reverence for the magnificence of the American wilderness.
