Robert Lee Freeman (1936-2019) Native American, Oil on Canvas, Portrait of a Chief. Signed lower right. A native American, born on the Rincon Indian Reservation in Southern California, he is a descendant of Bone Necklace, Sub Chief of the Santee Sioux. Freeman has won over 150 National Indian awards, for paintings of Indian and Western subjects. Starting with ink drawings, he gave a "Cowboy and Indian" art show with a friend who was a cowboy/painter at the Valley Fort, between Fallbrook and Bonsall, California. Soon he began painting in oil, selling and exhibiting his works in San Diego County as well as Scottsdale, Arizona. He has fulfilled mural commissions, and continues to live in Southern California.
