Robert Gonzales (1939-1981) American, Monumental Abstract Painting on Canvas, "Browning". Signed, titled, and dated '79 on the reverse. In a 1979 article for Art News, Thomas Albright states, "Robert Gonzales is a younger (San Francisco) Bay Region artist whose color abstractions are more in the lineage of the glowing, atmospheric fields of mark Rothko. Provenance: Private Collection, Hillsborough, California. Robert Gonzales (1939–1981) was a San Francisco-based painter associated with the Lyrical Abstraction movement. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, he studied at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, where he developed an interest in abstraction influenced by Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still. His artistic vision was also shaped by his Latino heritage, which remained a central source of inspiration throughout his career. In 1967, Gonzales settled in San Francisco, where he became an active figure in the local art scene. In 1970, he co-founded Galería de la Raza in the Mission District, an influential Latino artist collective dedicated to promoting Latino art and culture. Despite financial hardship and serious health challenges, Gonzales continued to produce and exhibit his work, earning critical recognition and establishing a growing presence in public and private collections. By the late 1970s, he was recognized as an important emerging figure in Lyrical Abstraction, exhibiting throughout California and in cities including Chicago and Seattle. His career was tragically cut short when he died of cancer on December 5, 1981, at the age of 42. His legacy was honored through numerous posthumous exhibitions, including the 1990 retrospective Portraits on the Wind: A Retrospective Exhibition of Robert Gonzales at The Mexican Museum in San Francisco.
