Musician in clown-face playing banjo on stage, oil casein lacquer on masonite, signed lower left. Robert Chase was born in Champaign, Illinois, studied art University of Illinois, and was an aerial photographer for the US Air Force in the South Pacific for four years. In 1947 he moved to Sarasota, Florida to attend the Ringling School of Art and later taught there. Chase opened his own art school in 1952 and continued to do so until the mid 1980s.
